About

Steel and Sap is a small joinery workshop building wooden gates to order.

What we do

Garden gates, picket gates and driveway gates, made from pressure-treated timber. Featheredge, tongue and groove, cottage and swan neck. Every one built to the size you need rather than the size that happened to be stocked.

We do not hold finished gates. Your order is cut, framed and braced after you place it, which is why we can offer widths in 50mm steps and heights from 900mm to 1800mm without a warehouse full of sizes that never sell.

Why made to order matters

Most gates sold online are mass-produced in a handful of standard sizes and shipped flat-packed from a distribution centre. If your opening happens to match, that works.

Openings usually do not match. They are 1050mm, or 1140mm, or the ground slopes. A gate that nearly fits gets packed out with timber offcuts, or trimmed down until the frame is compromised.

Building to size costs us no more than building to stock, so we do that instead.

How we build

Framed, ledged and braced. Pressure-treated softwood throughout. Supplied untreated so you can paint or stain to match whatever is already in your garden.

Gates are supplied without posts, hinges, latch or fixings — the standard across the trade, and it means you are not paying for hardware you may already have.
